A brand new 5 years.
It had been an enriching weeks leading up to the Polling day. From feeding my curiosity to challenging my personal thoughts about GE, I guess the best lesson for me is to be open-minded to different perspectives yet being critical in analysing the information that I come across with.
Every party had put up a really good tough fight. Personally, I am satisfied with the outcome and I hope Singaporeans do too without complaint. Because they made their (best) personal choices, be it casting to either party, or choosing not to vote or even spoiling their votes.
This morning sees a breakthrough for the opposition party and it clearly shows how much the younger generation wishes to be heard, beyond just the bread and butter issues. Honestly, I was skeptical about the reactions and views of the younger generation voters at first. But it shook me up a little when one of my friends reminded me that if the government doesn't haven faith in the younger ones, then there is something wrong with our system, the education system. I hope that WP can really prove themselves as what they say about the team, and translate their promises into actions. These 5-year period is crucial and it matters. Every day from now counts.
This morning also serves a strong reminder for the ruling party to re-examine their internal system and people in the team, as well as to have a deeper understanding of the citizens on the ground. I strongly believe that PAP still holds firmly to its motto and vision and it always works for the best interest of the country. I just hope that they can be more grounded, more open-minded and more empathetic towards the fellow citizens from today on.
I keep having this personal thought lingering at the back of my mind: It seems that many have dissatisfaction about what PAP does and they joined opposition to voice out their views. However, a part of me is wondering why they did not chose to join PAP instead to make subtle and perhaps more impactful changes along the way? Every party seems to have similar goal, which is to work for the best interest of the nation and people. Is the grass always greener on the other side?
On a side note, I always thought that politic is super complicated (it is), dirty and therefore, shouldn't be touched on. However, I feel that it can be engaging and challenging enough to keep me interested to find out more. I am thankful to have people who somewhat influenced me to care more about the country. Some have reinforced my personal beliefs, some have helped me see my blind spots and some have even gave me space to explain my perspective. This is certainly out of my comfort zone, but I do feel empowered that I can make difference for Singapore in my own way.
I believe we all care for our Singapore. So let's keep the faith and be hopeful.
