Flaw in Human Nature

"With the proliferation of Information & Communication Technology (ICT), more and more people are getting more interconnected, and will be able to keep themselves updated with the "first-hand" news happening around the world." I still vaguely remember that I used to write that for my GP essay when the topic is on ICT. Although I have my own train of thought and set of argument, I used to be always stuck in writing such argumentative essay. Lack of  current affair knowledge and critical thinking in me, I would say.

During the JC days, I used to find that reading up on current affair was a chore. With the intimidation by feary Mr Tan, I forced myself to read newspaper and even wake up at 5.30a.m in the morning to listen to the BBC news especially when there was GP lesson that particular day. All I could recall was the hard time trying to remember the facts- which I forgot they are, but the only one I know is about Haiti because Mr Tan actually drew out part of the world map and the country, Haiti :O

As I grow older, and become an educator, I begin to appreciate such critical thinking and my knowledge bank about current affair. I regretted that I did not appreciate gaining such skills, but at the same time, is hateful about the way I was being taught in school. Nevertheless, not everything is too late, we just have to learn things along the way, don't we?

With more maturity in thinking, I have my own set of thinking towards different local and some overseas current affairs- about HDB housing, natural and man-made disasters, health epidemics and debates like bonuses to civil servants for SG50. However, I am not as vocal as the rest of the people online, who posted their POV about certain issues, and share "big" news  to their friends. I felt that my thought was so myopic, and I wondered whether anyone would give a damn to what I say. I wish, I could be braver.

Okay, enough of myself beating around the bush. Haha. My main point is, I am pretty annoyed and disturbed by many people out there, who are reckless in posting comments or sharing news. Comments which lack certain depth and insights, and argue mindlessly way out, probably they want to "win" the debates.  And best, news- sharing which are not up-to-date and alarm people unnecessarily. I mean, if you really want to contribute in news-sharing, please share the up-to-date version. I really feel like rolling eyes when I see the news that was few years ago being shared by friends, or appeared in my news feed as it was circulated to many other people.

I am not saying whatever commenting or sharing are wrong. People has their own mindset and it is good to share different different perspectives. However, it really irritates me somehow when people are not empathetic in thinking in other people's shoes and insist on their stands. I am guilty for being one too, in certain situations. This is the flaw in the human nature, and we need to balance this shortcoming with more empathy and critical thinking.
